You line up the perfect shot, pull the trigger and… nothing. A half-second later your opponent is already gone. That delay has a name: ping, the round-trip time it takes your inputs to reach the game server and come back. The good news is that high ping usually isn't a mystery. Most of the time it comes down to a few fixable causes. Here's how to lower it, from free tweaks you can make in five minutes to the upgrade that solves it for good.
To lower ping for gaming, connect your device to the router with an Ethernet cable instead of Wi-Fi, close background apps and pause downloads, and select the game server closest to you. Packet loss is a close cousin: data that never reaches the server at all, usually from congestion, interference or faulty hardware. Even a little makes games stutter and rubber-band when your average ping looks fine.

Ping is the measurement, the round-trip time, in milliseconds, for a packet to reach the server and return.

Packet loss is different: instead of arriving late, data doesn't arrive at all. That's what causes sudden, unpredictable lag spikes and teleporting players, rather than the steady sluggishness of consistently high ping.
If you take one thing from this guide, make it this: for gaming, a wired Ethernet connection beats Wi-Fi almost every time. A cable straight from your console or PC to the router gives you lower, steadier ping and far less jitter, because your data isn't fighting through the air with every other device in your home.
Wi-Fi is built for convenience and has improved a lot, but it's still vulnerable to interference, distance and shared airtime. If your setup allows it, plug in. It's the single most effective free change most gamers can make.

Sometimes, but not as often as the marketing suggests. A VPN adds an extra stop and a layer of encryption, so in most cases it nudges your ping up by a few milliseconds rather than down.
The exception is when your provider uses a roundabout route to the game server or throttles gaming traffic. There, a VPN can offer a shorter, cleaner path. If you test one, pick a server close to the game's servers, choose a fast modern protocol like WireGuard and skip free VPNs, which are usually crowded and slow. For fast-paced shooters, 100 ms is on the high side. It's playable for casual matches, but you'll likely notice delayed hit registration and lose close gunfights in competitive play. Aim for under 50 ms, and ideally under 20 ms, for FPS titles like Valorant, Call of Duty or Counter-Strike.
True 0 ping isn't possible. Your data still has to physically travel to the game server and back, so there's always some delay, even on the fastest connection. The realistic goal is the lowest, steadiest ping you can get, which usually means single digits to the low double digits on a strong wired connection to a nearby server.
