Residents and businesses in East Brunswick and South River, New Jersey, are about to get a major connectivity upgrade. On September 22, 2026, Optimum announced a $14 million investment to deploy its 100% fiber-to-the-home network across both Middlesex County communities. Once the network is live, customers will have access to symmetrical fiber internet speeds of up to 8 Gbps, along with Optimum TV and phone services, for the very first time.
Service is expected to begin rolling out in early 2027. Here is what the announcement means for local households and businesses, and how to get ready.
The project brings fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) infrastructure directly to homes and businesses. Unlike network technologies that rely on copper or coaxial cable for part of the connection, a fiber-to-the-home network uses fiber-optic lines all the way to the building. Fiber carries data as pulses of light, which allows for faster speeds, greater capacity, and more consistent performance, even when many people in a neighborhood are online at once.
According to Optimum, the new network will enable thousands of residents and businesses in the two towns to access the company's fastest internet speeds, giving families and local companies more speed and capacity for everything they do online*.
While download speed handles streaming and online browsing, for more data-intensive users, upload speeds are also important. Video calls, cloud backups, sending large files, livestreaming, and online gaming all depend on sending data out, not just pulling it in.
Symmetrical speeds mean upload and download speeds are the same. With symmetrical fiber of up to 8 Gbps (in certain areas), a household can have multiple people working from home, streaming in 4K, gaming, and backing up photos to the cloud at the same time without the connection slowing to a crawl. For small businesses, symmetrical speeds make it easier to run cloud-based software, point-of-sale systems, video conferencing, and security cameras on a single reliable connection.
Optimum notes that its network has earned recognition from Ookla Speedtest for the fastest and most reliable internet in New Jersey, as well as the best gaming experience. For gamers in particular, the low latency of a fiber connection can mean smoother online play and fewer lag spikes.
Elton Hart, Vice President and General Manager of Optimum Tri-State, framed the investment as part of a larger commitment to the state: "Optimum's dedication to New Jersey goes far beyond delivering fast and reliable internet. We are committed to empowering our communities by investing in state-of-the-art connectivity."
Residents don't have to wait until 2027 for everything. Optimum Mobile service has already launched for customers in East Brunswick and South River and is available across New Jersey. Households that plan to switch to Optimum Fiber once it arrives may want to look at mobile plans now, since bundling home internet and mobile service can simplify billing and help lower monthly costs.
The East Brunswick and South River project builds on Optimum's existing presence in the Garden State. The company serves nearly 300 New Jersey communities, and in 2025 it announced a $40 million investment to bring fiber to Woodbridge, Clark, Linden, and Carteret.
Beyond infrastructure, Optimum supports New Jersey communities through partnerships with organizations such as DonorsChoose, FIRST, and the Boys & Girls Clubs, which focus on education, STEM learning, and youth development.
