Optimum vs. DIRECTV: Which is your best bet?

Deciphering which service provider best suits your needs can be an extremely time-consuming and stressful task. Furthermore, figuring out which specific offerings and bundles are best for you and your family based on a budget can definitely add some extra pressure! To make this task a bit easier for you, we have broken down various similarities and differences between Optimum and DIRECTV to help you figure out which one you should opt-in for.

What should I know?

Optimum and DIRECTV both have strong reputations and great services at reasonable costs. Upon further investigation, we’ve found that Optimum offers speeds ranging from 100-940 Mbps.

DIRECTV, on the other hand, does not offer Internet but you can opt-in for it through AT&T. AT&T owns DIRECTV so that’s what makes this possible. Both service providers also offer unlimited data plans and plans with no contracts which means you don’t need to stress about early termination fees for those offerings.

How is the set-up process?

Optimum offers free installation if you opt for one of their web deals, otherwise they charge a one-time fee of $99 for a scheduled professional installation. This includes Wi-Fi configuration for up to six devices, the hardwiring of one device, and assistance with setting up your Optimum account. If you are interested in setting up more devices with Optimum, you can opt for the premium installation which costs $129 or $59 through the website. DIRECTV does not charge an initial installation fee. However, there is a $99 installation fee for additional receivers plus a $7 monthly charge. In addition, you need to pay a regional sports fee of up to $9.99/month.

How is the Internet Quality and Speed?

Optimum costs $29.99/month for 100 Mbps, $39.99/month for 300 Mbps, $59.99/month for 500 Mbps, and $79.99/month for 1 GB (940 Mbps).

As discussed previously, DIRECTV does not offer Internet but you can opt-in for AT&T's Internet services which include 300 Mbps for $35/month, 500 Mbps for $45/month and 1000 Mbps for $60/month.

What are the Internet options?

Optimum offers both cable and fiber to an estimated 12.9 million people spanning four U.S. states. AT&T offers fiber to several million people across 21 states. The main difference between fiber and cable is that cable is sent through copper TV lines whereas fiber is made of plastic and used mainly for Internet service. Fiber is typically considered better due to its ability to provide high-bandwidth connections and quick upload times. Furthermore, fiber tends to suffer less from slowdowns caused by high traffic. It should be mentioned that fiber is not always an option in certain areas due to the high costs associated with it. The good news is that Optimum does still offer cable if fiber is not offered near you.

What home telephone services do they offer?

Optimum offers a home telephone service for $10/month. If you're interested in Internet and television also, you can bundle services for a discounted price.

As for DIRECTV, they offer home phone services through AT&T. AT&T offers a traditional home phone for $37/month with unlimited local calling, reliable connection, and optional long distance. For $51/month, they offer an Enhanced option which includes 12 popular calling features like caller ID, call forwarding, and speed dialing. If you're interested in long distance, they offer several options such as per minute calling, an unlimited calling plan, and an International plan.

How do Optimum Mobile and AT&T mobile phone plans work?

Optimum is a part of Altice, which offers a mobile phone service that starts at $14/month for 1 GB per line or $22/month for 3 GB.  If you’re interested in unlimited data, you can opt-in for this for only $45/month per line. Keep in mind that these prices are if you're an Optimum customer that utilizes their television or Internet, otherwise their mobile plans are $10 more than quoted above. Optimum Mobile offers a nationwide network with 5G access and no multi-line commitments.

DIRECTV does not offer mobile phone plans, but AT&T does. AT&T offers three distinct mobile plans, all of which require a minimum of four lines. All these plans include unlimited calls, texts, and data throughout the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. Their lowest cost option is the AT&T Unlimited Starter which typically costs $35/month.  The AT&T Unlimited Extra Plan costs $40/month and includes an additional 50GB of premium data. Lastly, the AT&T Unlimited Elite package offers an additional 100GB of premium data.
