Deciphering which service provider best suits your needs can be an extremely time-consuming and stressful task. Furthermore, figuring out which specific offerings and bundles are best for you and your family based on a budget can definitely add some extra pressure! To make this task a bit easier for you, we have broken down various similarities and differences between Optimum and DIRECTV to help you figure out which one you should opt-in for.

What should I know?

Optimum and DIRECTV both have strong reputations and great services at reasonable costs. Upon further investigation, we've found that Optimum offers speeds ranging from 100-940 Mbps.

DIRECTV, on the other hand, does not offer Internet but you can opt-in for it through AT&T. AT&T owns DIRECTV so that's what makes this possible. Both service providers also offer unlimited data plans and plans with no contracts which means you don't need to stress about early termination fees for those offerings.

How is the set-up process?

Optimum offers free installation if you opt for one of their web deals, otherwise they charge a one-time fee of $99 for a scheduled professional installation. This includes Wi-Fi configuration for up to six devices, the hardwiring of one device, and assistance with setting up your Optimum account. If you are interested in setting up more devices with Optimum, you can opt for the premium installation which costs $129 or $59 through the website. DIRECTV does not charge an initial installation fee. However, there is a $99 installation fee for additional receivers plus a $7 monthly charge. In addition, you need to pay a regional sports fee of up to $9.99/month.

How is the Internet Quality and Speed?

Optimum costs $40/month for 300 Mbps, $60/month for 500 Mbps, and $80/month for 1 GB (940 Mbps).

As discussed previously, DIRECTV does not offer Internet but you can opt-in for AT&T’s Internet services include prices such as 100 Mbps for $35/month, 300 Mbps for $45/month and 1000 Mbps for $60/month.

What are the Internet options?

Optimum offers both cable and fiber to an estimated 12.9 million people spanning four U.S. states. AT&T offers fiber to several million people across 21 states. The main difference between fiber and cable is that cable is sent through copper TV lines whereas fiber is made of plastic and used mainly for Internet service. Fiber is typically considered better due to its ability to provide high-bandwidth connections and quick upload times. Furthermore, fiber tends to suffer less from slowdowns caused by high traffic. It should be mentioned that fiber is not always an option in certain areas due to the high costs associated with it. The good news is that Optimum does still offer cable if fiber is not offered near you.

Optimum offers a home telephone service when combined with an Internet and/or television package. If you're interested in telephone and Internet only, you can choose Internet that is 300Mbps ($45/month), 500Mbps ($50/month) or 940 Mbps ($55/month).
