The origin of Apple TV+

Since Apple first launched the Macintosh in 1984, the tech giant has been household name. Despite some of its well-documented ups and downs, Apple has changed the course of the consumer tech market multiple times, most notably with its iPod and iPhone. While Apple might be a little late to the party on some other fronts (or early, if you owned a Newton), the company stays true to its reputation for quality products and services. Apple TV+, Apple's entrant into the streaming services space, but relies on Apple's penchant for quality to take a bite out of streaming giants like Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and newcomer Disney+.

How are Apple TV, the Apple TV app, and Apple TV+ Different?

Apple TV+ differs from both the Apple TV and Apple TV app in several ways.

Apple TV is a set-top and streaming box that allows you to stream videos from other streaming services, such as iTunes, Amazon Prime Video, ESPN, Hulu, Netflix, etc. There are two models, one for HD and one for 4K.

The Apple TV app, which is free, is a service that allows you to stream content from a variety of different services. You can have individual subscriptions to specific channels, and also rent or buy movies. Most Apple products, like the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, usually come with the app installed.

Apple TV+ is a subscription service, like Netflix, that offers over 30 Apple originals, as well as a wider catalog of content.

What Does Apple TV+ Have to Offer?

The streaming service features a variety of original prestige content. Below are just a few examples of Apple's well-received content.

The Morning Show: Follows the behind-the-scenes drama of a national morning news TV  show, starring Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Steve Carell.

See: A sci-fi drama that takes place centuries after a worldwide catastrophe caused nearly all humans to go blind. It features Jason Momoa and Alfre Woodard.

For All Mankind: A sci-fi series set in an alternate timeline where the Soviet Union landed on the moon before to the US could, which leads to NASA and the US playing catchup. Starring Joel Kinnaman and written by Ronald D. Moore of Battlestar Galactica fame.

Dickinson: A comedy that features a fictional version of poet Emily Dickinson, played by Hailee Steinfeld.

Helpsters: A series that teaches children about coding, produced by the Sesame Street producers at Sesame Workshop.

Oprah’s Book Club: A show that brings back the virtual book club implemented by Oprah Winfrey. New episodes release monthly.

What Movies Are On Apple TV+?

Apple has a robust selection of original films.

The Banker: A drama inspired by true events, about two Black businessmen in the 1950s who figure out creative ways to combat racism in pursuit of the American Dream. Starring Samuel L. Jackson and Anthony Mackie.

Beastie Boys Story: A documentary about the hip hop group’s rise to fame, directed by Spike Jonze.

How Much Does it Cost?

A feature that helps Apple TV+ stand out is that though the service is one price, Apple TV streaming allows up to six people on a single account, complete with 4K quality and media downloads. There are no premium options, as all features are included in this basic plan.

If you already have an Apple Music subscription, it might make sense to go with the Apple One subscription. This bundle includes Apple TV+, Apple Music, Apple Card, and 50GB of iCloud storage all for $14.95 per month. You can upgrade to the family plan (again, allows up to six people) for $19.95 per/month. Does Apple TV+ Have Any Promotional Deals?

Apple initially offered one free year of Apple TV+ to anyone who had purchased an Apple device, including iPhones, Macs, iPods, and Apple TV set-top boxes. This offer is still available for new purchases but must be claimed within three months of setting up your device. In addition, new Roku devices are eligible for the three free months of Apple TV Plus. If neither apply to you, you can still get seven days of Apple TV  Plus for free.

Where is Apple TV+ Available?

Apple TV+ launched Nov. 1, 2019 in over 100 countries and regions.

Apple states that its originals will be subtitled or dubbed in nearly 40 languages, which includes closed captions as well as Apple TV+ series and movies being available with audio descriptions in eight languages.

Apple TV+ is available in 107 countries worldwide, though this does not include some high-population countries, like South Korea, Romania, and Turkey. It’s also not available in some countries that support the Apple TV app.

How Do I Get Apple TV+?

Signing up is simple and can be done via the Web or the Apple TV app. When you open the Apple TV app on your device, the option to sign up will typically be the first thing that you see. In this case, tap "Try it Free" and confirm your purchase to begin. This will get you the seven-day free trial before you're charged the usual $4.99 per month.

If you're using the web, go to the Apple TV+ website, then navigate to and click "Start Your Free Trial." From there, if you aren't already logged in to your Apple account, log in now. If you're eligible for Apple's free year, you'll receive a pop-up stating you can claim that offer. This offer, if you're eligible, should show up regardless of the device you're using.

Once your free trial expires, you'll have the choice to switch to an Apple One subscription if you already have other Apple services, like Apple Music, iCloud storage, and Apple Arcade. This bundle is more cost-efficient than paying for each service separately.

On What Devices Can I Watch Apple TV+?

Apple TV+ is available on any device that supports the Apple TV app.

Most Apple products, like any iPhone, iPad, supports Apple TV, just make sure your device is up-to-date with the latest software. Apple TV set-top boxes are compatible as well but need to be third-gen or higher.

You don't need to be an Apple loyalist to watch Apple TV+ content, though, as several other streaming devices support Apple TV+, like devices by Roku, Amazon, and some of the most popular brands of smart TVs. If your smart TV doesn't have an Apple TV app but you have an Apple device, you might still be able to stream Apple TV+ content to your TV via AirPlay 2.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, since the Apple TV app is not available on the Google Play Store, Android devices generally don't have app-based access to Apple TV+. The streaming platform can be accessed on Android devices through the web portal, the same way it can be accessed from any web browser.

You’re also able to set up the Apple TV+ app on your PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S consoles.

Below is the entire list of Apple TV compatible devices:

Apple TV (4K, HD, and 3rd generation)
Roku (la mayoría de los modelos)
Amazon Fire TV (most models)
Samsung Smart TVs (2018 and newer models)
Sony Smart TVs
Vizio Smart TVs
LG Smart TVs (2019 and newer models)
Mac (macOS Catalina 10.15 or higher)
PC (web browser only)
Android (web browser only)
PlayStation (4 and 5)
Xbox (One, Series X, and Series S)

Is Apple TV+ Worth Getting?

Unlike Netflix, Apple TV+ doesn’t have a lot of old favorites. Their catalogue of non-original content is relatively small. If you’d like to indulge in some prestige original content, then the asking price of just $4.99 per month might not be a tall order. Although Apple TV+ does not feature blockbuster favorites, Apple does provide its original content with a generous budget, which allows its original content to features A-list actors and actresses.

Give it a shot! After all, they do offer a seven-day trial.
