Want to get more out of your mobile phone provider?

With tech brands like Apple and Samsung releasing new versions of devices every year (at least), many people have become accustomed to upgrading their cell phones annually. For some, it makes complete sense-if you need a super-high resolution phone camera, for example, or are simply someone who likes to stay on top of the latest tech. Others upgrade their phones when switching providers simply because they think it's required.

What many people don't know, however, is that you don't have to get a new phone just because you're changing your service. With a Bring Your Own Phone program, you can keep your current phone (and number) for as long as you want. Ahead, we'll break down what, exactly, bring your own device (BYOD) programs are and answer some common questions about them. We'll also give you a quick run-down on how to bring your own phone with Optimum Mobile. Find the proverbial 411, ahead.

What Is a BYOD Plan?

While sometimes referred to as a plan, BYOD is a program offered by some mobile carriers that enables you to keep your existing device when switching between different mobile plans or carriers. BYOD programs have numerous benefits, but the most obvious one is cost: keeping your existing phone means you don't have to buy a new one-and considering how pricey new phones can be, this could translate to hundreds of dollars saved.

The benefits of bringing your own device aren't just financial, though. For one, keeping your current phone while it still works is a great option for those looking to reduce their electronic waste. Similarly, if you keep your current phone, there's no need to buy new chargers, accessories, or equipment for it. Also, you won't have to change numbers (a huge plus) or spend time trying to move photos and other files from your current device to a new one. In short: BYOD offers simplicity. For those who don't need the newest technology to get the most out of their phones, it's a great option to consider.

Is It Cheaper To Bring Your Own Device?

As mentioned, bringing your own phone allows you to sign up for a phone plan without the cost of buying a new device. However, you do need a fully-functional, unlocked phone to participate in these programs. Your phone also needs to be compatible with your chosen BYOD program (you can check if your phone is eligible for Optimum Mobile's BYOD program here).

If you don’t have a phone to carry over to your new plan, that’s okay: Optimum Mobile has a range of mobile phones to fit different budgets and needs. Compare phones today and find the option that’s right for you.

How Much Does a BYOD Program Cost?

BYOD programs cost the same as any other phone plan, minus the cost you'd need to pay for the phone. In other words, all you're paying for is the service itself. If you're looking for a budget-friendly mobile plan, Optimum has plans that start as low as $15/month per line. You can find out more about the different mobile plans we offer and how much they cost here.

How Do You Participate in a BYOD Program?

Getting started with Optimum Mobile's bring your own phone program is fast and easy. Keep reading to learn what you'll need to do to switch carriers and keep your existing device.

Step 1: Check That Your Phone Is Compatible

At Optimum Mobile, we're currently able to accept iPhones SE, 6 and above, Motorola phones, and some Samsung devices with our BYOD program. If you're not sure whether or not your phone is compatible, you can check eligibility here. Note that you'll need your phone's International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number to determine compatibility. If your phone is compatible, you can move on to step two.

Step 2: Unlock Your Device

Next, you’ll need to unlock your device. Each carrier has different policies regarding getting your phone unlocked, but generally, the device will need to be paid off in full before they'll process your unlock request. If your phone is paid off-or you're ready to pay it off-contact your carrier, and they can help you get your phone unlocked.

Step 3: Pick Your Optimum Mobile Plan

The last step is choosing your Optimum Mobile plan. Compare our plans and choose the one that best suits your needs. Once you've picked your plan, we'll get you set up with an Optimum Mobile SIM card. Replace your phone's existing SIM card with our SIM card, and you'll be set to start saving while enjoying Optimum Mobile's nationwide coverage through T-Mobile.
